joesugar   It is with great regret that we announce the passing of Joseph Sugar.
Joseph Sugar dedicated more than 50 years to the art of teaching and was a tireless advocate for the advancement of music education. Mr. Sugar began his career as a trumpet and string bass player in bands that assisted major stage and recording artists, and recorded for MGM, Fox, and London Records. He was Director of Bands at Indiana University, Matawan High School, Upsala College, Bethpage High School, and Hewlett High School. Mr. Sugar was the retired Director of Music for the Hewlett-Woodmere School District and has served as president of NYSSMA, NYSCAME, MENC Eastern Division and NMEA. Joseph Sugar was also an honorary lifetime member of SCMEA. Mr. Sugar served as professor of education at Long Island University/CW Post Campus, and recently concluded a long term as NYSSMA Government Relations Coalition Chairperson, where Mr. Sugar was a driving force in promoting advocacy for music education in schools.
